Update: March 2020: Due to the current unintended consequences related to the impact of social distancing and shelter-in-place requirements across the United States, I want to be sensitive to the economic hardship  and uncertainty that many are experiencing right now. So that I may focus directly on supporting nonprofits through this crisis by helping them to create a fundraising strategy and communication plan to navigate the next few months, enrollment in the 30-Days To Launch Your Nonprofit is postponed until June 2020. The program will launch to the waitlist first, so please sign up.

This world needs more people like you -- action takers who see a need and dream up ways to make it better! Yet more than just dreaming, you are willing to DO SOMETHING.

While others simply talk about the issues plaguing this world, you are fanning the flame within that is telling you to start a nonprofit.

And, here's where all the questions come:

  • Where do I start?
  • What paperwork do I need?
  • How do I file?
  • How do I find Board members?
  • How do I raise money to fund the mission?
  • There's so much information out there, how can I trust what I'm finding online?

Don't worry; I've got your back!

The 30-Days To Start Your Nonprofit group accelerator program will guide you through the 5 critical steps to start a nonprofit.

Focus on the "5 F's" to Start a Nonprofit

Knowing where to start can feel overwhelming. In the 30-Days To Start Your Nonprofit we will take a deep dive into the five most crucial aspects of launching a nonprofit so that you can build a solid foundation for growth, right from the start.

1. Fact-Finding

Mistake: Many nonprofit founders assume that their passion is enough to launch and sustain a nonprofit.

Reality: Passion will guide you in the process, but you will need more than passion to develop partnerships. To build bridges and collaborations, in community or virtual, you must be able to communicate the issue(s) your nonprofit will address and the solution you offer.

We start week 1 with a focus on how to perform the research necessary to establish the context and validate your mission.

2. Filing With The IRS & Founding Documents

Mistake: Lack of preparation and planning leads to a shaky foundation and aimless effort that will prevent traction in the first few years.

Reality: The filing and founding documents serve as the foundation that your nonprofit will build upon. They must be clear, thoughtful, and set the vision for growth as they will guide every major decision your leadership team will make for many years.

In Week 2 we review the necessary documents required to file with the IRS and the essential materials that make up your guiding documents.

3. Funding Your Cause

Mistake: Many founders skip the process of creating a Revenue Generation Plan and personally fund the work in the first few years,

Reality: 50% of all nonprofits will fail, primarily due to lack of revenue. A Revenue Generation Plan forms the framework for your nonprofit's fundraising efforts in the short- and long-term.

In Week 3 we dive into the core documents that make up your nonprofit's funding portfolio that serve to lay the groundwork for your fundraising efforts.

4. Finding Volunteers

Mistake: Founders take responsibility for doing "all the things" themselves, which leads to burnout.

Reality: Taking the time to create the infrastructure to build teams is a priority in the first year of operation.

In Week 4 we explore how to develop a clear system to recruit, train, place, and retain a committed team of passionate volunteers.

5. Filling The Board Of Directors

Mistake: Founders often recruit their friends and family to serve on the Board just to meet the filing requirement.

Reality: Finding the right volunteers to serve on your Board is crucial since this team will be responsible for making many governing, legal, financial, and programmatic decisions that will impact operations for decades.

In Week 5 we review the 5 characteristics to look for in prospective Board members as well as the professional qualifications to consider when forming your Board.
