Monthly Fundraisers for

Community Well-Being

What can I, a white woman of privilege and health, do to make a positive influence on the world?

This is the question I find myself pondering during 2020, a year of dramatic upheavel to complacency. I believe the answer starts with living a life in pursuit of well-being, beyond the physical sense.

I'm charting a life course to ACT with COMPASSION

for the GOOD of ALL BEINGS.

I make a difference by taking action. If others are inspired by my action to also act, it creates a greater positive impact.

Allow me to introduce the Monthly Fundraisers for Community Well-Being.

I am donating $52.00 (I'm 52 years young) to a community organization each month (July 2020 - June 2021). I'm encouraging others to give. If only 6 people given even $10, my contribution will be doubled.

As my thank you, I am providing free yoga/movement recorded classes to you when you donate.

October 2020 Organization

Camp Mark 7

It's my privilege to highlight an organization this month that provides full communication access for deaf and hard of hearing individuals.  That place is Camp Mark 7.

Located in the beautiful Adirondack Mountains of New York, Camp Mark Seven, is a retreat camp offering educational, recreational and spiritual programs for deaf, hard of hearing, and children of deaf adults (CODA/KODA). It was established in 1982 and is a place to experience fun, adventure, safety, and great camaraderie in American Sign Language (ASL).

September 2020 Organization

C.U.R.E. Childhood Cancer Association

Over the past few months I discovered a valuable community resource in the Facebook groups: Churchville/Riga Community Page and Residents of Chili NY. Both local groups share neighborly tips and foster an overall feeling that together we can. So when Brie Spuk requested donations for an organization that supported her family as they navigated her young son having cancer twice within two years, I was in.  *That's the Spuk family pictured above.

A diagnosis of cancer is always a devastating blow, but never more so than when the patient is a child. C.U.R.E. Childhood Cancer Association exists to provide emotional, educational, social, and financial assistance to Rochester-area families whose children have cancer or a blood disorder. Join me in supporting C.U.R.E.

August 2020 Organization

Lifespan

Please join me in donating to Lifespan.  Lifespan helps older adults and caregivers take on the challenges and opportunities of longer life. Since 1971, they have provided programs such as elder abuse intervention and prevention, and dementia/Alzheimer's as well as established several older adult centers.

This month I looked for a cause stepping up to serve the community during the Coronavirus pandemic.  I noticed several older adults particularly struggle during this strange time.  Loneliness being especially pronounced for these community members during quarantine. The nightly outing to the diner not possible.  Grubhub? What's that?  Place a weekly grocery order via InstaWHO?  No extra long hugs from the grandkids.  Even Sunday's church service requires Facebook.

My parents and grandparents are no longer on this earth, but there are many elders still with us.  Let's do our part to show them we care.

July 2020 Organization

Rochester School for the Deaf

Please join me in donating to Rochester School for the Deaf (RSD). Located in downtown Rochester, this educational non-profit serves infants through high school children with hearing loss, including programs for parents and community members to learn American Sign Language.

After college, I moved to Rochester, New York to work as an Interpreter for the Deaf.  Members of the Deaf community, including RSD staff, welcomed me with kindness, patience, and oh-so-many ASL lessons. They are still welcoming me and teaching me as my roles change. I appreciate, beyond what words and signs can explain, the people I have the privilege to know and build relationship with over 25+ years. Please join me in giving back by donating to a vital organization in the Rochester Deaf community.
