Dr. Gaius Eudoxie is an advocate for soil and Senior Lecturer of Soil Science at the University of West Indies (St. Augustine Campus) with responsibility for teaching and research in sustainable soil management. Additionally, he serves as Deputy Dean, Outreach and Internationalization, Faculty of Food and Agriculture. He has over 20 years teaching and research experience in soil management with a significant part of that focus dedicated to soil health management. He is a member of several national and regional committees and has coordinated and facilitated capacity building in integrated soil and water management throughout the Caribbean. He has a strong passion for teaching and learning and utilises several techniques aligned to students’ learning styles. He has supervised several graduate students researching various aspects of sustainable soil management, composting and agronomy.

Dr. Eudoxie has consulted across the Caribbean on sustainable soil and land management, IWRM, composting and crop nutrition. While regional outreach has mainly been centred on training and development, he has coordinated and participated in regional projects aimed at assessing soil health, reducing vulnerability, increasing resilience and enhancing adaptation to changing climate and its impacts on soil and water resources.

Advocacy has led to association and membership in groups, societies and organizations that share a common respect and desire to sustainably manage soil. Dr. Eudoxie is a Vice-president of the Latin America and the Caribbean Regional Soil Partnership and Co-chair of the Intergovernmental Working Group on Drought under the UNCCD. He has taken the responsibility of showcasing soils as more than “dirt” through media articles and commentaries. He serves are a science advisor to the Partnership Initiative for Sustainable Land management and co-coordinates IWRM capacity building in the Caribbean through Caribbean WaterNet. While Dr. Eudoxie recognises the importance of research he acknowledges the role of policy and governance in the sustainability framework. He is dedicated at improving the weak policy and institutional arrangements currently governing soil resource use and management.
