If you’re after serious adventure, look no further, you’ve found it! The Hollyford-Pyke loop by packraft is quite possibly the greatest guided adventure in New Zealand!

You’ll use packrafts to traverse over 150 kilometres of pristine Fiordland wilderness, access remote coastlines, see incredible wildlife and enjoy complete solitude for 5 nights and 6 days.

The Fiordland Explorer guided packrafting expedition gives you access to an area normally visited only by very experienced backcountry explorers.

You will paddle the Hollyford River, Lake McKerrow, Lakes Wilmot and Alabaster, and the Pyke River.  You will walk along the rugged coastline to Big Bay, cross into the Pyke Valley, and wander past waterfalls on the famous Hollyford track.

A maximum number of 6 people and 2 guides makes sure you'll get a very personal experience and have constant support on this breath-taking, challenging, and unforgettable journey.

Why Choose Packrafting New Zealand?

Packrafting NZ is not like any other commercial activity operator.   Our trips are not a tourist activity rather a way to experience the true essence of the New Zealand Wilderness.

There are many activity operators that advertise wilderness adventures and then take groups of 20 or more people.  The wilderness ceases to be the wilderness when visited as part of a large group of tourists.

For us the wilderness is a place where you should be a little uncomfortable, it is challenging and forces you outside of your comfort zone.  For us the wilderness is a place we go to find ourselves and to escape the stress and rigours of our everyday lives.  It is the ultimate getaway!

In a small group, with very limited numbers we leave as few traces as possible on this pristine  environment.  By restricting numbers we can ensure we avoid disturbing the natural environment  that we enjoy and love so much.

There are many stunning locations in our country.  Most tourists visiting our area head straight for Milford Sound, we get it, it is iconic and beautiful.  However, if you prefer to beat your own path than just to follow the crowd let us take you into areas that will take your breath away and allow you a true New Zealand wilderness experience.

Are You Up For The Challenge?

This trip is the crown jewel of packrafting in New Zealand.  With four trips a year at six people max, only 24 people will have the chance to experience it.

While for many it represents a once in a lifetime type of adventure, it is not for the meek.  Fiordland weather is unpredictable, the days are relatively rigorous, and the setting is, well, very nearly at the end of the world. But for those up for the challenge, it offers unparalleled rewards not typically found in commercial trips.

So what about it?  Are you up for the challenge?

Selection Criteria

As you can imagine our trips are not for everyone and with strictly limited numbers we want to ensure we take people who will get the most out of this experience.

There is an expectation that you will be physically able to undertake the trip and understand what you are getting yourself into!

You must be comfortable in and around water, be able to carry your own backpack and gear, live without your mobile phone and ideally have some kayaking experience.

Selection Process

Once we receive your application it will be reviewed by the guides taking the trip.  We will contact you either by phone or email to discuss your application and advise on your suitability for this experience.  As we spend most of our time in the great outdoors it may take us up to 5 days to contact you.  If your application is urgent please contact Arno or Andy on (03) 445 3080 or send us an email -
