ABOUT WILL FRIEDWALD'S "CLIP JOINT"
(presented both in person and virtually / live streamed)

Will Friedwald’s “Clip Joint” is a series of enrichment lectures about music, theater, film, television, and other aspects of popular culture, combining live narration with rare video footage and well-chosen slides and other visuals.  For a dozen years, these innovative presentations have presented live and in person at such venues as The Film Forum, Jazz at Lincoln Center,  the 92nd Street Y, The Long Beach Jazz Festival (California), The Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival (Portland), The Barcelona Jazz Festival (Spain), and on cruise ships all over the world (Viking, Crystal, SilverSea, Oceania, and virtually every other upscale cruise line).

“Clip Joint” is created by Will Friedwald – columnist for The Wall Street Journal and author of ten books on music and popular culture –  covers the entire range and spectrum of musical performances as documented on film and video: both classic and contemporary, from jazz and Broadway to rock and pop to country & western, blues, opera, comedy and novelty songs, world music, and the Great American Songbook.

A typical Clip Joint program combines classic performance footage - gathered from a wide range of sources - along with slides and other visuals, along with Will's exciting and insightful commentary, that places performers and songs in a historical and social context, in a highly fun and humorous, entertaining fashion.

Will Friedwald writes about jazz and popular culture for The Wall Street Journal, The New York Sun, and his own series on SubStack, Slouching Towards Birdland. He also is the author of ten books on music and popular culture, including the new Straighten Up and Fly Right: The Life and Music of Nat King Cole (2020), The Great Jazz and Pop Vocal Albums (2017), the award-winning A Biographical Guide to the Great Jazz and Pop Singers (2010), Sinatra: The Song Is You, Stardust Melodies, Tony Bennett: The Good Life, and Jazz Singing. He has written over 600 liner notes for compact discs, received ten Grammy nominations, and appears frequently on television and other documentaries.
