Muriel and Morgan are twins, siblings so close that sometimes it's a struggle to find their own identities. With their ailing mother and narcissistic father, their life is challenging enough - and then Aunt Mallory dies in a mysterious boating accident, revealing a family curse.
The twins set out to uncover the truth about their family and what really happened to their aunt. They learn that everything they believe to be reality is just an illusion, and they must rely on each other and their faith to keep their family together. The one constant is their twin connection and the ocean . . .
When twins Murial and Morgan find out their mother is a mermaid, it is all they can do to convince their father to find her and bring her back home. The stakes are high as one of their Siren friends warned them of the plans of the Believer, a man who intends to use their mother, grandmother and another mermaid to cull the human population through a series of deadly storms, and the only people who can stop them are Loralei's family. I loved the premise of this book, as well as the world-building, the characterization, and how it all plays out. What a wonderful adventure tale for those coming of age! I highly recommend this book!
I’ve never read anything by Carlisle before, but she’s a major talent and I mean that sincerely. I judge books by their first couple of paragraphs and this one grabbed me right away. This book put me in a clear headspace where I could almost hear the ocean. I miss the beach. The descriptions are sharp and the narrator has personality and wit. The flow is smooth, the characters are interesting, and I could totally see this as a movie. This book should be bigger. Get it! Trust me
This is a highly imaginative mermaid tale that is full of surprising twists and turns as the characters try to solve the mystery of their family curse and what happened to their aunt. It gives me the impression that I am there with the characters. It's ideal for any young adult who is obsessed with mythical creatures and sea lore.
