From Pith Paper Painting to the Thirteen Hongs of Canton
Sharing Stories about the Maritime Silk Road

December 2021

This engaging event was hosted by an array of experts, Dr Frances Wood, renowned sinologist, and vice president of the Society for Anglo Chinese Understanding, Alastair Blackburn, a collector of pith paper paintings, Dr Cunjie Cheng, researcher and scholar of pith paper paintings and curator of the Memorial Museum in Generalissimo Sun Yat-sen's Mansion, and Heng Wang, an honorary curator of Guangzhou Thirteen Hongs Museum.

Pith paper painting is a technique that uses watercolours on thin slices of stems from a rice-paper plant. The art pieces feature vivid shapes and bold colours. Different methods produce abstract effects, resulting in the illusion of a 3D image. The talk will investigate the intriguing story of the magnificent art form in the context of modern studies and the history of Chinese and Western cultural exchange.

A Window Into An Unseen China

Hear engaging stories from the team behind Trails China, Leon McCarron and Dennis Hu. In this talk from the 29th of June 2021, Leon and Dennis shared an insight into creating a world-class trail in China from scratch in this remarkable online talk.

Leon McCarron is a writer, broadcaster, global adventurer and trail development consultant. Leon has crossed China from north to south during his varied travels. Dennis Hu, a native of Hunan Province and now a resident of Bristol, UK, is the CEO of MIC Connect Ltd, a company specialising in the sustainable promotion of reputable Chinese tourism attractions and manufacturing brands to a worldwide audience.

Together, Leon and Dennis shared the story behind developing the impressive long-distance hiking trail in Xuefeng Mountain. Leon and Dennis' life experiences and in-depth cultural knowledge of the local residential community united and now allow visitors to take a glimpse into an unseen China.

Following the presentation by Dr Frances Wood of her talk 'The Making of Modern China - From Sun Yat-Sen to the May 4th Movement', an online panel discussion took place.

Ms Wenlan Peng of The Meridian Society chaired the discussion between Dr Frances Wood and Mr Hugh Cantlie, grandson of Sir James Cantlie, who featured significantly in the talk on Sun Yat-Sen.
