World Children's Day takes place on 20th November. This is the date in 1959 when the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, first drafted by Eglantyne Jebb, the founder of Save the Children. It is also the date in 1989 when the UN General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child. In honor of World Children’s Day, Save the Children Hong Kong will raise awareness of issues that impact children’s development and call for actions, so together, we can create a brighter future for children.

This year, the theme of the World Children’s Day event will focus on nurturing the hearts and empowering children, by saying no to verbal abuse.

Research has shown that 1 in 4 secondary school students in Hong Kong feels like a failure. 3 out of 5 have worried that someone they know will harm themselves. Children have cited academic pressure, parents’ expectations, violence, and uncertainty around their future as contributors to their distress. Many do not know that even words can harm. Humiliating words from parents, teachers or peers can make a child feel worthless and unloved. The effects of verbal abuse on children’s emotional wellbeing can last a lifetime.

Let’s pledge to “Stop Verbal Abuse, Save with LOVE” and apply positive parenting to create a brighter future for children.

Save the Children Hong Kong had the pleasure of meeting Mickco, the local fashion illustrator, and share with us, his personal experience and thoughts on of verbal Abuse. Taking this opportunity to raise awareness on the effects of verbal abuse of children's emotional wellbeing.

Born in Hong Kong, Mickco’s passion for art and music stemmed since a very young age. His distinctive works have made him become renowned illustration artist in Hong Kong.
