Building a culture committed to learning

Building a learning culture isn’t hard. What’s more, having a culture that doesn’t support learning can be devastating. So the incentive to focus on having a learning culture is clear. But what does that look like?

Building a learning culture can include a few things:

  • Invest in training your teams and embrace a growth mindset. This shows your values and can make team members more committed and empowered to put the organization’s vision into practice. If you are willing to provide training for your employees, it is clear that you value learning and your employees will take this in and help build a culture of continuous learning.

  • Reward employees that invest their time in learning new skills beyond what’s required to do their job. While there’s a skills gap in many organizations, it may be hard to fill roles and so retention is key. This one feels so good. You have an employee who learned a new piece of technology on her own time. Not only do you give her a great new assignment, but you call out her new skill to the rest of the team.

  • Prioritize certifications in hiring and recruiting, and I’d add, in promotions. Suddenly, the way forward has very clear steps and potential hires and employees know exactly what level of training they need in order to go as far as they want.

Whether tech is in your mission or it enables that mission, every company is finding they need to work with tech in new ways. This is called tech intensity. When you are able to use existing technology to create new technology that gives you new capabilities, you are in a state of tech intensity.

Tech intensity is the future. This is so important that I’m going to say it again: Tech intensity is the future. This is where you’re going. Being able to use existing technology to create new technology requires advanced skills. And with training, you will get there.
