ABOUT MINDFULNESS

Mindfulness is a state of focused awareness and presence in the present moment, without judgment or attachment to thoughts, emotions, or external circumstances. It involves intentionally paying attention to your experiences, thoughts, sensations and surroundings in a non-reactive and non-judgmental way.

The practice of mindfulness originated from ancient Buddhist traditions but has been adapted and incorporated into various secular settings today. It involves bringing your attention to the present moment, observing the thoughts and feelings that arise without getting carried away by them or trying to change them.

In mindfulness, you cultivate an attitude of acceptance, curiosity and openness towards your experiences, whether they are pleasant, unpleasant or neutral. It involves non-judgmentally acknowledging and accepting the thoughts, sensations and emotions that arise, allowing them to come and go without getting caught up in them.

Mindfulness practices can take various forms, including seated meditation, guided meditation, body scan exercises, mindful movement (such as yoga or walking) and integrating mindfulness into daily activities like eating or listening to others.

The benefits of mindfulness practice include:

Stress reduction:

Mindfulness can help you to manage stress and reduce anxiety by developing a greater sense of calm and equanimity in the face of challenging situations.

Improved focus and concentration:

Regular mindfulness practice can enhance attention and concentration, allowing you to be more present and engaged in your tasks and activities.

Emotional regulation:

Mindfulness helps you to become more aware of your emotions and develop a non-reactive and compassionate stance towards them. This can lead to better emotional regulation and resilience.

Increased self-awareness:

Through mindfulness, you develop a deeper understanding of your thoughts, emotions and patterns of behaviour, enabling you to make conscious choices and respond rather than react impulsively.

Enhanced well-being:

Mindfulness practice has been associated with increased overall well-being, improved relationships and a greater sense of overall life satisfaction.

In July 2023, I achieved my certification as a NLP Master Practitioner. I am also trained in an NLP technique called Core Transformation, which is used to help individuals create positive change at a deep level.

My journey into mindfulness began approximately 15 years ago when I was experiencing high levels of stress. I subsequently attended an 8-week MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction) course and became a member of a local mindfulness community in Maldon.

I have participated in two UK-based mindfulness retreats, as well as two yoga and mindfulness retreats in Goa. I also introduced mindfulness to a number of project teams during my corporate career.

I live in Tollesbury and share my home with my husband, son and two cats. I am a member of TollsVols and I volunteer through the RVS, as well as being a governor at Tollesbury School and a member of the HART core committee. I am passionate about learning and I enjoy helping people make positive changes in their life.
