The house

Tribute to City by C D Simak

The house stood on the top of a hill. The tenants came and went. Men built it and were the first to inhabit it. After centuries, the dogs came when men disappeared for the Jovian moons. The ants followed them. They stayed for a very long time and were good keepers. The house liked them a lot and take good care of them. She loved also the sun and the stars, sun and rain, and, preferred of all, the wind on its windows. Then the ants left and it felt lonely for a long while. No one cared for it and it had no one to care for. It thought of moving to find new inhabitants but no house ever walked easily on Earth.

After a very long time, the big crash came, in the scariest moment of its life. Unending earthquakes, lava and fire, air leaving the planet. And then the great shattering crack that destroyed Earth and sent asteroids flying all over the galaxy. It was a better time. She travelled now to many stars and suns. Naturally it took time but she was patient. She felt it was worth it. She even had visitors, becoming quite a celebrity after a time, a special resting place for aliens on their way to one side of the universe to the other.

At last, everything contracted around her, every stars, planets, bits of dust seen or unseen. She was tired by then but she felt at the center of things. She entered the big contraction last, swallowed by the great nothingness.

Even He in the end came to sit under the shade of her portico while He thought of his next plan. Then he closed the house, very properly, and said ‘Goodbye, see you in another universe’. Light exploded around it…
